The Hotel Room Test: How to Pick Promotional Products People Keep

Published: May 20, 2026Trade Show Tips

I use this test every time I help a client choose promotional items for trade shows.

I call it the Hotel Room Test.

Picture this:

Someone is at a conference, trade show, corporate event, training seminar, or sales meeting. They are packing up their hotel room to fly home.

Their suitcase is already full.

Now ask one simple question:

Would they make room for your promotional item?

If the answer is yes, you have probably chosen a winner.

That means the item has real value, real utility, and real staying power.

If the answer is no, there is a good chance it ends up in the hotel trash can, left behind in the room, or abandoned before the person ever makes it home.

That is why choosing promotional products should never be based only on price.

I have seen inexpensive promotional items pass the Hotel Room Test because they were useful, relevant, compact, and worth keeping.

I have also seen more expensive items fail because they felt bulky, cheap, irrelevant, or not worth the space in someone’s luggage.

The real question is not, “How much does this cost?”

The better question is:

Will someone want to carry this home?

That is the difference between a throwaway giveaway and a promotional product with real perceived value.

Before your next trade show, conference, recruiting event, employee gift campaign, customer appreciation project, or branded giveaway, use the Hotel Room Test.

Will they pack it?

Will they use it?

Will they remember who gave it to them?

At Perfect Imprints, we help businesses and organizations choose promotional products that are useful, memorable, and worth keeping.
