Episode 1: The Shady Pitch - Tales From the Swagside

You blink at the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead as you step into the busy offices of Promo, Promo, and Promo. The walls are splashed with bright colors, echoing the diverse array of promotional items encased in glass displays, featuring every imaginable promotional item, from stress ball hamburgers to branded pickleball paddles. But today, the real spectacle looms in front of you: a conference room adorned with oversized notepads and wobbly chairs that seem to swallow people whole.

Seated beside you is Noah Lott, convinced he's a promotional prodigy. With an outdated tie, neon orange jacket, and a smug smile plastered across his face, Noah flips through his phone notes with an air of remarkable confidence.

"Alright, Sloanne, prepare to be amazed!" he announces, sounding far too self-assured for someone who once pitched rubber chickens to a corporate law firm.

You roll your eyes, trying to summon what little patience you have left. You're Sloane Steady, and with twenty years of experience in promotional products, you pride yourself on your intuitive grasp of clients' needs. Noah, however, seems to think 'edgy' means slapping a logo on an inflatable alligator and calling it a day.

Today's client is Ray D. Ation, the marketing director for a dental office. The man's name alone could halt traffic, or perhaps cause a spontaneous dental emergency. The poor guy has already been through three rounds of calls with Noah, his face pockmarked with mounting confusion every time Noah dangled yet another uninspiring product in front of him.

As you gather your materials, Noah leaps up again, the enthusiasm almost palpable. "How about chatter teeth with their logo on them? They are hilarious! What says "Dentist" more than chatter teeth?" He beams proudly, oblivious to the facepalm you're suppressing.

"Okay, Noah, how practical are chatter teeth?" you respond, crossing your arms. "Ray wants something fresh, something that makes people go, 'Wow!' instead of 'Oh, look, another cheap piece of junk that quickly makes its way to the trash can to become brandfill.'"

Noah shrugs, his smile faltering only slightly. "Fine, let's think bigger! Just imagine," He pauses dramatically. "Custom logoed plastic bibs! Who wouldn't want one while sitting in a dentist's chair?"

You shake your head, pinching the bridge of your nose. "What will we put on the bibs, 'Welcome to the Mouth of Terror'? Remeber, our client is is a friendly dental office, not your local haunted house."

Noah looks defeated, flipping through his ever-thinning notebook. "Okay, but every great pitch starts somewhere, right?"

A heavy sigh escapes your lips. The clock ticks ominously closer to the meeting time as you scramble to find inspiration. "What do dental patients love? Sun and smiles!" you say out loud, the idea sparking in your mind like fireworks bursting on the Fourth of July.

"Sun?" Noah asks, clearly still way off the mark.

"Think about it, genius." You let the word 'genius' dangle in sarcasm before continuing with excitement. "What do people do while they're having their teeth cleaned and worked on? While in the dental chair, they sit under a bright light pointed at their face. Instead of the Dental Hygienist giving them a pair of junky sunglasses that have been worn by countless other patients, which are plastered with previous dental splatters, they give them a brand new pair of sunglasses, and the patient gets to keep them after their appointment! But these won't be just any sunglasses! They will be sunglasses with UV400 protection!!"

Noah blinks, slowly catching on. "Wait… sunglasses? It's genius! But how do we tie it to the dental office?"

You grin, the plan forming like a beautiful puzzle piece sliding into place. "They're already practical because they shield the patients' eyes from the bright dental lights. Imagine the tagline: 'Champion Your Smile!' Users will associate the sunglasses with good vibes, outdoor fun, and great dental care. Plus, they're perfect for summer! They could also give them away at health fairs, patient appreciation days."

As you finalize the pitch, you find yourself skimming through the notes and preparing visuals. The office fills with the sound of tapping keyboards as everyone gears up for the Zoom call. You can hardly contain your excitement; this could be the moment you've both been waiting for.

A few minutes later, Ray D. Ation appears onscreen, his overly bright smile and and large fivehead framing a face that emanates a certain chaotic energy. "So, team, what have you got for me?" he booms, his eyes twinkling through his thick glasses.

With newfound enthusiasm quietly brewing, you present your idea; Noah backs you up, finally having abandoned his dubious notions. "We're thinking about offering your clients bright and funky sunglasses with UV400 protection! Easy to wear, great for sun protection when they head to the beach, and they tie into your mission of promoting healthy smiles," you explain, feeling the excitement bubble in your chest.

Ray's eyes light up, the corners of his mouth twitching into a smile. "Wow! Now that's how you make a pitch! Everyone loves sunglasses!"

You and Noah exchange triumphant glances as Ray continues, eyebrows waggling. "We're going to have a lot of excited patients in our office!"

By the end of the meeting, Ray is all set to approve the promotional sunglasses. You can practically hear the smiles on his patients' faces when they find out they get to get the sunglasses.

As Ray waves goodbye, Noah lets out a triumphant laugh. "Okay, Sloane, maybe you do know how to spice things up. You're not bad!"

You smile, heartily rolling your eyes. "Just keep practicing, Noah. You're getting there, one boring option at a time."
